Welcome

The Office of the Ombudsman is a confidential, impartial, informal and independent problem-solving and conflict resolution resource for all students of the George Mason University community. The Office of the Ombudsman provides a safe place to help students review options for managing or resolving interpersonal disagreements and university-related concerns. We do not provide legal services nor do we advocate for anyone. The Office of the Ombudsman operates under the Standards of Practice set forth by the International Ombudsman Association.

By visiting with the Office of the Ombudsman, you and the Ombudsman agree that the Office will not disclose or keep records of individually identifiable information. The Ombudsman will not agree to participate in any formal proceeding. Your communications with the Ombudsman are never shared with anyone without your permission, and the only exception to that confidentiality is imminent risk of serious physical harm to another person or to yourself. This agreement fosters confidentiality and helps provide a safe and neutral place for discussing any concerns.

The Office of the Ombudsman offers a good alternative if you:

  • Want to discuss options on how to deal directly with a concern
  • Are uncertain about taking a problem through other established channels
  • Are unsure who to talk to about an issue or concern
  • Want an informal non-escalating approach while retaining control over your next steps
  • Want to discuss strategies or possible options and resources for resolving a concern
  • Want to maintain the greatest flexibility possible in addressing a concern

The Ombudsman does:

  • Listen to your concerns
  • Discuss possible options
  • Explain GMU policies & procedures
  • Facilitate communication between people
  • Make referrals and help connect students to services/resources
  • Point out patterns of issues and concerns to administrators
  • Keep your visit strictly confidential (unless an exception applies)

The Ombudsman does not:

  • Tell visitors what they should do
  • Take sides in a dispute
  • Determine who’s right or wrong
  • Give legal advice
  • Participate in any formal process
  • Represent or advocate for any individual or group
