Standards of Practice

"Confidential" stampThe George Mason University Office of the Ombudsman operates under the Standards of Practice of the International Ombudsman Association (IOA) and offers services under the unique principles listed below. Confidentiality:
Information shared with the Ombudsman, as well as the identity of clients of the Office, is kept confidential. Confidentiality is the privilege of the Office, and is not observed only in cases where danger or harm is imminent.

Independence:
The Ombudsman operates independently from all University offices, and reports to the offices of the Provost and University Life only for budgetary and administrative purposes. The Ombudsman has access to people and information relevant to each case, but respects your right to confidentiality along the way.

Neutrality:
The Ombudsman does not the take side of the student or the University when handling a case, and only advocates for a fair process, with no personal gain in the outcome of situation.

Informality:
The Ombudsman does not participate in any formal grievance process at the University but can conduct informal investigations. Contacting the Ombudsman is voluntary and at the discretion of the client, and is not considered a formal or required step in University procedures.
